Rope was needed to carry the tree, then he(she?) tied it to another tree to keep it in place, then they nailed in the tree to keep it on the cliff.

...So you didn't get the video...

He was a flightless bird whose only dream was to be able to fly. He spent all this time nailing the trees sideways down the cliff so that when he jumped it would simulate actually flying over the trees.
