I absolutely love this piece, but it always makes me cry like a baby, no matter how many times I hear it. I think that hearing it for the first time whilst watching 'Lorenzo's Oil' didn't help. I saw Nanci Griffith at the Royal Albert Hall a few years ago and she was accompanied by the London Symphony Orchestra, they played this during the show and I don't think there was a dry eye in the venue by the end...the power of music is quite astonishing sometimes. Maybe I just need some HRT... : )
This is absolutely beautiful; I had never heard of Samuel Barber before but we are singing his "Sure on this Shining Night" in regional choir and the director suggested listening to this piece; it is so beautiful it gives me chills and goosebumps.
