It was actually a mash-up used in Glee. I can't remember the other song, but I thought they blended the two together quite well. There wasn't meant to be the building tension, it was message and confrontation... I wouldn't say the mash up is better than this song, but it wasn't crap, either.
All the comments suggesting that the Glee version is better than the original gives me the sad realization of how American Idol-ized musical tastes are now becoming. Glee may be a great show, but come on...the rendition is meant to be a glee club take on the song and strips it entirely of its sense of tension and longing. I fear it won't be long until the entirety of popular music in the states will begin to resemble the soundtrack of High School Musical.
