The proper meaning of the word is hunter. The only reason it means stupid nowadays is because kids misunderstood a bugs Bunny cartoon years ago. Bugs Bunny called Elmer Fudd a nimrod or a "hunter" which he is. The kids watching thought he was insulting him. Instead of correcting the children when they started using it, it was just excepted as a new meaning for the word. If anyone cares :)
