youre partly right. they shared similar grammar, and in some cases very similar vocabulary.
hoppar = to jump in swedish, hop is to jump in english

lernen in german is learn in english.

But yeah, Germanic is the lingual classification, and German just happened to use the family name as their language name. Pretty much nothing more. Norwegian is just as derived from German as Chinese is from Spanish.

In German's defense, the germanic languages are "die germanische Sprachen" in german, and the german language is "die deutsche Sprache"

Now, it is foolish to say that this is the only similarity. You should recognise, Norwegian and German is not at all so far from each other than you think! Of course, I don't say they are no separate languages, but with the eye of a foreigner (hun), I tell you there is a kinship that is undeniable...
