I think that because of the nature of popular culture (i.e., its insatiable apetite for profit and therefore its struggle to truly represent the revolutions of the time), if an artist reflects the times, then they are changing the times. Imagine if, let's say Rhianna decided to make a whole album dedicated to the struggles of immigration in the U.S. in a straight forward and non-diluted manner, don't you think she would be changing the times? just a thought :-)

Nina is great because she did not shy away from reflecting her times out of fear or incompetence. I agree that great art reflects the time but the point I am trying to make is that can the artist be given the consensus to change the times without sacrificing the authenticity of the masterpiece. To give an example, is writer on slavery be allowed to make a political statement about the inhumane conditions of slavery, without confusing the boundaries between art and politics.
