I believe the bass in Cash's version is too jumpy and bright, and there's no sense of the tragedy of the story in his cover. On top of that, it's more 1-dimensional compared to Ugly Kid Joe's version, it seems more like something he'd play at a concert as a one-off thing as opposed to a serious studio recording.
