That's wrong, Jerry and Ed wrote it together while doing the soundtrack to into the wild. I think Jerry wrote most of the song but it was made for the film and id call it as much as a eddie vedder song as a jerry hannan song. It's not a cover atleast.
You mean Jerry and Eddie sat down together and wrote the song? But Jerry wrote 'most' of the words? I don't think so. Where are you getting this info? The soundtrack clearly states that Jerry Hannan wrote the song. Jerry did write it for the movie but it is certainly not 'as much as a eddie vedder song as a jerry hannan song.' If you want to get in a argument about it technically not being a cover becuase it was Vedder who made the song famous thats one thing but give credit where credit is due
Yes, McCandless was ill prepared. Yes, he probably was a city boy who underestimated what it takes to survive in the wild.
However, you who criticise the film and McCandless for this have totally missed the point. Into the Wild is not Survivorman or a special forces training video. You people need to mature emotionally to appreciate McCandless and the film.
McCandless was perhaps a naive idealist. That does not make the story less beautiful.
"Probably underestimated" is an understatement. The very society from which he was running was a kid's playground compared to nature's cruel, cold and harsh treatment to those who do not know how to live within her limits! Utopia does NOT exist and he learned the hard way. Anyway, the only beautiful things about the movie are the soundtrack and the fact that the ones he selfishly left behind grieving for him get to experience him again and again, albeit via celluloid.
Hej Magnus my dear ex-workpal, writing the comment here...: Yes nice song..and its probly new, but these kinda songs make me wanna lay down and just wait til someone turn back the clock 25-30 years /Today sucks so hard, what happened to everything that REALLY means something

And no, I'm not a city boy myself.
