Experimental Lotus Coating with Nano Glass
The lotus effect is the superhydrophobic property found with lotus plants' leaves. The picture shows it on nasturtium. A fine structure on the surface of the object supports the property of the material. So nano glass powder is very effective. The powder has a particle size of about 10nm. (In the picture the particles are shown with coating for the scanning electron microscope).
The powder is spread on the surface and the solvent is evaporated. The white line marks the 100nm thickness of the wet layer. The petri dish is treated the same way. Drops are rolling on the surface. A large drop acts as a loupe. Drops combine to a resonant mass. The water can also be moved electrically with a charged plastic stick. The uncoated half of the petri dish is wetted by the water. Is that a chance for no more dishwashing with nano coated dishes? :o)

Der Lotus Effekt ist der super- wasserabstoßende Effekt, der auf Blättern der Lotuspflanze finden ist, im Bild auf Kapuzinerkresse. Eine feine Partikelstruktur auf der Oberfläche fördert die Eigenschaft. Das macht Glaspulverr sehr wirksam. Das Pulverr hat eine Partikelgröße von 10nm. (Im Bild sind die Partikel mit der Beschichtung für des Raster-Elektronen-Mikroskop dargestellt.)
Das Pulver wird auf der Oberfläche verteilt und das Lösungsmittel verdunstet. Die weiße Linie zeigt dabei, an welcher Stelle die Dicke der feuchten Schicht noch etwa 100nm beträgt. Die Petrischalle ist in gleicher Weise beschichtet. Tropfen rollen auf ihrer Oberfläche. Ein großer Tropfen wirkt als Lupe. Tropfen vereinen sich zu einer schwingenden Masse. Das Wasser kann auch elektrisch mit einem geladenen Plastikstab bewegt werden. Die unbeschichtete Hälfte der Petrischale wird von Wasser benetzt. Wird man sich eines Tages mit nano beschichtetem Geschirr das Geschirrspülen sparen können? :o)
