Screen scrolling was used to modify where and when some enemies spawned, in order to finish the level faster.

I am sure that with waaaaaaaay too much free time on your hands, a large pool of raw talent and no social life to speak off, you can definitely beat this game without save states :P.
kaizo requires what most gamers call "r-type" memory, the actual memorization of basically the entire game. that means that you know everything that's going to appear on screen, how it will move, and how to avoid it. though it's hella difficult i would recommend Kaizo, because it helps your short term memory, at least it helped me.
