i do know that in flight simulator you have to have thigns called magnetos on thats basicly a generator this basicly i think works inr evorse as in electo magnets start the shaft spining by LIM i thiiink anyway. anyway if you turn the power of it continues to run butt if u dont have the electrics on to start with the starter generator dosnt work adn thus neither are magnetos... sooo it hink its electricaly turned.

Magnetos are used on piston engines to spark the cylinders. Turbine engines are completely different, using electric igniters, similar to large spark plugs to start the flame, but once they get going, they are self-sustaining. This is why they continue to run once you cut the electrics. The easiest way to stop one is to cut the fuel. They are normally started either with compressed air or with a specially designed starter/generator.

I have a stupid question... If pressure and temperature after the ignition become higher, why doesn't it propagate "backwards" into the compressor?

Also, what is an afterburner and how does it work?

Well the way I understand it (and Im still a student, so no expert on the topic), the flow continues in that direction because of its momentum and inertia. The pressure is certainly higher in the combustor section, but remember that pressures are also very high after the last stage of the compressors before entering the combustor. If this was not the case then the pressure would probably be sufficient for backflow. There is a case where you see this happen, it is called compressor surge.

I dont want to get into how exactly that happens since its complicated, and also I only understood it in terms of equations and performance plots, but basically its an instability in jet engines. So you actually have oscillations of flow direction and you can sometimes see flames coming out the front of the engine and large explosions. I think there are a few videos of this phenomenon on youtube itself so search "compressor surge".

As for an afterburner, well thats something you find only on fighter jets. Basically its the last stage in the engine in which fuel is pretty much just dumped into the flow. It works similar to a combustor section in terms of the math. It is very inefficient tho, fighterjets significantly reduce their range when they actually use the afterburner. Its used when the pilot needs a sudden speed increase, so its kinda like using nitros in a car. Also many fighters need to use it to go supersonic.

also in a fighter jet you care about the dimensions of the engine.. since the engine usually runs down the center of the aircraft you cant have one as wide as a commercial jet... the wider ones are more efficient because you have a higher bypass ratio, so in a fighter jet you sacrifice that efficiency for size.. after all you want the fighter jet to be compact and stealthy

Thanks. It's like putting a big engine, in which fuel efficiency is sacrificed in the name of performance, in a Ferrari, while a smaller engine, for more fuel efficiency sacrificing performance, is needed for a Toyota.

to answer your second question, passenger jets and fighter jets are built to fulfill different requirements... first there is the performance requirement, fighters require high thrust which can be at the expense of efficiency, whereas commerical aircraft require efficiency above all so theyre profitible.. fighter engines have things like thrust augmenters (after burner) at the last stage of the engine, in case the pilot wants lot of thrust.. in an f16 its needed to go supersonic..
