Old, schmold, Gandalf. Men get old. Elves under too much duress, occasionally perhaps. But the istari were old ages ago when they were dispatched to middle earth to combat the dark lords, as old as the world itself, in fact.

There's more to this story though. The new land that the elven ships discovered was the Arctic cyrcle, where Frodo and Galadriel settled down and raised a family. And as Hobbit and Elf blood continued to mix throughout the ages, the Elves of 3rd Earth evolved into the Christmas elves of Santa's workshop we know today.
