The best version is Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grapelli. then this one then bobby's. But the French and English versions both have their merits thought both are abot totally different things...I think this song is great swung(Django swings it but has enough of the french tradition in him to keep it rooted)Darin's version is 'tres Americain' I think Trenet captures the mood of reflection on nature in La Mer while Bobby captures the mood of reflection on love. Django's version makes me cry.

This so much more beautiful than the American version! I sing it all the time now, thanks to the show Lost.

no shit.. im a dj and some lovestruck couple asked me for any charles trenet at a party at 4am one morning and thanks to my lost addiction i remembered id downladed shannons prequel and the ensuing song.. it mixed out of some other tune and was one of those moments that strangely has me boring you all about it..... vive a mer!!!
