Of course, this plot device was copied from the "musical code" gimmick in Hitchcock's great little '35 film "The Lady Vanishes". However, being serious about the harmonica myself, I'd a hell of lot rather see (and hear) Ronald Chesney than the phony Mitteleuropaeischer folk singer Hitchcock used! (Freereeder)

So is it an important part of the movie?

Well, it depends on what you call important. Throughout the movie there is constant reference to being able to remember the tune, and, played on a piano, it is just about the last sound you hear before fadeout.
