No, it was banned because the FIA decided rotary engines were'nt allowed any more.
It wasn't the fastest at le mans, peugeot, mercedes and jaguar were all faster, the 787 was more concistent and reliable.

And because they deemed the rotary engine as having "unfair weight advantages."
