Great movie considered a B picture, Bela Lugosi was originally to portray the dead Dracula but the studios decided to use a wax dummy instead, a shame really. Also the "comic" sniping between Otto Kruger (Dr. Garth) and Marguerite Churchill (Janet) actually detracts greatly from the movie as this wasn't the arch kind of comedy in Bride of Frankenstein. But for a few changes this could have been a major horror film. Still one of my favorites though, very atmospheric.
This is the primary source of the nonsense we have today culminating with Twilight; oh sure they're vampires, but they feel bad about it, so it's okay.
Of course Dan Curtis and Jonathan Frid's Dark Shadows and Barnabas Collins did a lot to revive this after years of Hammer studio's snatch-and-grab attacks.
But ultimately the more sympathetic portrayal was endemic in the Romantic period of literature, and their vampires.
When I was 14 I was told by two kids in my choir that I looked like the woman from Dracula's Daughter. Back then I had no idea what they were talking about. But now I can kind of see the resemblance.
