You can see in the video that the blue guy (is he blue because he's depressed?) tries to escape in a rocket. But the system, the giant hungry spider catches up with him and steals his ideas and forced him to conform again.
Also towards the end the blue guy tricks the system by feeding it a box instead of one of his own original ideas. The system collapses and everyone escapes. It's a happy positive ending to give us hope.
John Reuben was a "new" out-of-the-box idea, that the blue guy sold to a corporation to reproduce, categorize, and market. Making the idea unoriginal again.
The music industry in one of the best examples of this behavior.
I think John Reuben was the blue guy's idea, and the blue guy just represents an average white collar working guy trying to survive in our society and being forced to conform.
It's about how the media and corporations control are culture, and society. They turn every original ideal into a products to sell it back to us. They also conform us into categories, and labels (boxes) to market products.
Creative people that think outside the box are squashed, or forced to conform. The cycle continues, the system keeps on feeding off of us, stealing out culture, and our ideas.

This is my interpretation.
