A lot of work went in to making the movie as authentic as possible. But remember folks, its a story, it didn't really happen in history. I think this movie is a wonderful classic, I own it and I would recommend it to anyone. The commentary by the director is great.
Because the Vikings did not have horns on their helmets. Very few examples of that have been found, but thought to have been for ceremonial purposes. Going Viking with horns on your helmet would've been extremely impractical as well. The horns would only work as an invite for a sword/axe straight into your cranium.
True - I think there has been maybe one example found.
However, helms with cheek-plates (as per the Sutton Hoo helm) with the cheek-plates tied up on top to allow air to circulate can look like they have horns on from a distance.
The helmets from Sutton Ho and Valsgärde are designed to look like a falcon seen from the front. When the wearer rides with such a helmet, the hinged cheek plates will pendle to resemble the wing strokes of the falcon. They are helmets that reflects the high rank of the owner, presumably a king.
