He always has these song ex machinas at the end of his movies that make everything alright somehow, lol. But it's always really good and symbolic.

in the end Hedwig makes peace with his spiritual side [aka Tommy] which is why the tattoo becomes whole and Hedwig walks alone and naked. It is symbolic. Spirituality, by the the way, does not imply christianity or even religion.

the movie is about both spirituality and intellectuality. We all need a balance of spirituality and intellectuality in our lives, but often spiritual people reject intellectual people and vice versa. Tommy Gnosis, who was raised christian, represents spirituality and Hedwig represents intellectuality , albeit a very cynical kind [comment continued]

@incrediblejessen
On that note, the end of the movie might suggest that Tommy and Hedwig finally became the same person. Or maybe they were never two different people at all.

A cross doesn't necessarily mean anything religious. As a symbol it also represents two intersecting lines. Maybe one line represents Gnosis and the other Hedwig. The point is the intersection of the two. Just a thought.

gnosis is also a word for divine knowledge (something close to that, knowledge of the divine or infinite). Not necessarily religious, but spiritual.
