The idea of communism and its actual strength are two different things. The problem is that this idea is impossible to be held without any terror. It's just cotradictory to people's nature.

@bb0magda0k Hmmm, not really. I hold it fine, and don't really fear anything, apart from anything happening to my child (something every parent fears). It may be contradictory to some, but it's the most natural thing in the world to a lot of other people. Sometimes we forget how immensely different people can be. Many idealisms are just great, but when flawed humanity enter into the mix, everything goes wrong. As long as we have a reason for people to be selfish, they will be selfish.

@peterl44 just saw a program about that; apparently the conventional wisdom at the time (1916?) was never to do these operations again, but US marine corps studied it closely and the mistakes that were made. just like the lessons learned @ dieppe that saved lives on d-day, the loss of so many anzac & brit lives @ gallipoli saved marine lives in pacific 25 yrs later.
