What's so stressful? How about being out on the trail for upwards of 10 days in brutal temperatures, running on the dog's schedule and getting about 2-4 hours of sleep a day, keeping an eye on each of your dogs and noting their spirits, appetites, and anywhere they may feel a bit sore, and all the while trying to keep half an eye on your closest competitor while switching strategies on the fly. Discovery played up the harsh environment, but it's largely a mental game :)
I agree. I've been on a few dog sleds and they just love to pull. The dogs are bred to pull, handle the cold and if you let them, would continue to pull to exhaustion and even death. They are unbelievably fit athletes and the Iditarod would be the equivalent of a human running 40 marathons back to back. The dogs are the real story of the Iditarod....Go doggies!!
