whats the advantage to this over a drum machine without balls or a regular drumset or an electronic one. i mus be missing something

not about advantage, just a different way of producing sound

Frickin' awesome conversation piece, to say the least... but can you adjust the tempo?

This version is a very stripped down research prototype, so there's no hardware tempo control. You can easily adjust the tempo with software though, and it's easy to add a dedicated knob/slider if you want to build you own version (see the BeatBearing website for link to MAKEzine instructions)
