so each box (seen at 4:42) has a colony in it. In the summer the hive can have as many as 50,000 bees and there is only one queen in the entire hive

just like humans, who only have one queen/king at a time. colony is the name given to all the bees living in the hive, a collective noun for social insects. "hive" and "colony" are the same word really when talking about bees. hope that helped :)

Colony means city, or place to live.

Each Colony only has one queen bee
as each city only has one mayor or each country has

yes, sometimes a worker bee will start to lay. This is not good, her eggs are sterile, and hatch into drones. The hive is doomed.

what are drones and why is the hive doomed?

Drones are the males bees and the hive is doomed because a worker bee lays sterile eggs so only male bees are born and male bees don't collect honey or pollen, they just mate. So no new worker bees (the females) are born therefore the colony will die out eventually
