The love stories were really the only things that made Lodoss special (particularly the Parn/Deedlit one). Most of the other fantasy elements weren't done all that well, and the only reason people might disagree is because Lodoss is 1 of only like 5 decent anime dealing with tolkien or DnD-esque mediaval fantasy, and the shortage has affected their perception. It was just a paint by number of DnD cliches mixed with high fantasy otherwise.

This is the anime of course; I've never read any manga.
