Notice turbo start by Silke Gladisch-Moller in lane 5! This is another of those freaky athletics records set in those years. It was 1985, in Canberra for the 4th edition of IAAF World Cup, the GDR athletes set the world record for 4x100 metres with an extraterrestrial and still unbeaten 41.37, GDR improved it for the 9th consecutive time and frankly I doubt any relay could beat it.
Results: 1) GDR (Silke Gladisch-Möller, Sabine Rieger, Ingrid Auerswald, Marlies Göhr) 41.37 2) Soviet Union 42.54 3) Europe 43.38

And where is Germany now. In the sprint world, they are practically non existent - thanks stricter drug laws. I wonder if this record were to be smashed by U.S. or Jamaica, would I be quick to say it's due to the drugs? With all this controversy, track is not as much fun to watch anymore cuz everyone is being accused of doping and there are very few raw talents out there - our generation really has no Jesse Owens' or Evelyn Ashfords. I do love Allyson Felix, Sonya Richards, and Tyson Gay.
yeah, considering how doped up GDR was during this time, I'm actually stunned they didn't go 40. how many teams, USA, JAM, BAH have run 41-mids & could easily be faster than 41.3 with better exchanges?
I wonder how fast Gladisch ran that opening 100. She was flying. The only country that has a shot at breaking this record are the Jamaicans, but they rely on their speed too much.
East Germany had the fastest runners, albeit drug-assisted, but they were masters at passing the baton. A lot of people think these records should be scratched, but how on earth do you determine which record is valid. Even after the advent of drug-testing, athletes were still using steroids and not getting caught.
I know, it wasn't just East Germany, West Germany had Anne Richter and Inge Helten in the 70's, but East Germany upped the dosage on the steroids and left the West behind.
It wasn't just the drugs though, although they helped. Their entire system was amazing. They would scout kids from a very young age to compete in a particular sport. East Germany was good at everything though. Even in the Winter Olympics, they would dominate.
Nice one Johny. When the germans unite, i thought they are going to be a superpower...athletics and swimming!!..but surprise surprise..they falter big time....I miss their supremacy.
