Wasn't the "gh" in "knight" pronounced in a sort of "k" fashion? Just how much research does she bother to do before sallying forth to unveil her supposed intelligence before an audience mostly interested in her breasts?

Some others silent letter combinations include; the GH in "night" or "height". But there is also the case of special sounds, not just silent, i.e.: the GH in "laugh" or "cough"(sounds as "F"). But then there is also PH sounding as an "F" as in "Philosophy".

The reason, in my opinion, that the rules of the English language are so complex is that it is Germanic with Gaelic & Celtic mixed in, then Latin influenced it several times & 1/3 of the words are French.
