You're right, the singer leads the listener astray, he's playing on words:
When he sings "Du hast mich ..." every German listener would think he means "du hasst mich" (you hate me), because "du hast mich (you have ... me)" by itself doesn't make any sense. Only when he completes the sentence ("du hast mich gefragt" - you have asked me) does it become clear what he means to say and one realizes one has been fooled.
