Continuation of my first comment: If you were to place your finger in the area where no rice is present, you would feel a vibration. The rice is being held in pattern position by gravity (down force) acting against two vibrating surface areas. The rice 'rattles' in all directions until it is blocked by adjacent vibrating surfaces. Pinched between two occilating surface areas. Shakeing a jump rope between two persons can better illistrate the non vibrational point, at middle.
Understanding the effect: The patterns are created at each OCTIVE. Listen for the tone to hit an exact octive above the last tone/pattern and you will agree. The plate supporting the rice IS what vibrates. The tone is simply in exact resonance with the plate's mass. The rice can only reside at the plates neutral occilation point. A sine has a zero point where it crosses the Y axis (see: the graphing of trig functions). I never got my degree, and am the only one on U tube who can explain this???
This relates to our own personal vibrations. We all vibrate at a certain frequency so to see this video is just confrimation that we have just barely touch the surface of this mysterious universe.
youre all morons, the shape of the board does matter, and it is the vibrations of the board the rice is showing, this could be done with any sort of fine particle, usually sand or cork powder. A circular board would just have concentric rings that shrink as the frequency gets higher
