And how do you think he became a heroic spirit? Heroic spirits are just that - SPIRITS. They're ghosts. The only one who is an exception to that is Saber.

The timeline is that the person makes a wish and sells their soul to the devil, dies, and is then trapped in service for eternity. Yes, I know it's not 'The Devil', it's a comparison to a common phrase and theme.

Depends, do you consider taking a fatal blow then dissapearing into nothing death? If so yes, he got killed three times in three different routes... Man Archer need's a break. As for Archer not dying because he was made into a CG, well if you don't consider being brutally stabbed by about 30 different weapons and barely making a contract with Akasha not dying... Then yes, he didn't die when he made the contract. But again, he gets killed three times in three different routes of the visual novel.

Heroic spirits don't turn into nothing.

The timeline is simple.
He made a contract to save a bunch of people, meaning he'd become a heroic spirit after death.
One of the people he saves blames him, he gets hunted down and killed.
He dies, his 'soul' is sent to the throne of heroes.
Soul, memories, body, etc. is copied and incarnated for the grail war.

Archer is dead before Fate starts, because he's a damn ghost.
