Guthrie wrote this song as a protest against "God Bless America" recorded by Kate Bush in 1938, with all its references to God, prayer, etc. In fact, "This Land is Your Land" was originally titled, "God Blessed America for Me".

As i was walking i saw a sign there, and on that sign it said "no tresspassing", But on the other side it dident say nothing, That side was made for you and me.
I think it is criticizing the country. But in a way that isent saying "FUCK AMERICA!" Hes saying there are problems that need to be fixed. Nothing is ever perfect and he saw that

@stevie -

Does it criticize America, or does it criticize the economic system?

@StevieBabbayy It does not criticize the country. This line is about the economy: "In the squares of the city, In the shadow of a steeple; By the relief office, I'd seen my people. As they stood there hungry, I stood there asking, Is this land made for you and me?"

And thats just a variant of the lyrics. Not like a recording without it is censored or incomplete. The entire song is meant to be patriotic.

yeah, this should be our national anthem. I am not fond of the one we have now. ALSO, QUIT ARGUING ABOUT THE SONG!!!!! IT IS AN AMERICAN SONG WRITTEN BY SOMEONE WHO REALLY DID KNOW WHAT BEING AMERICAN MEANT. WOODY KNEW HE WAS LUCKY TO LIVE IN THE USA, BUT WASNT OVER PATRIOTIC ABOUT IT, BECAUSE HE NEW IT HAD MANY PROBLEMS FROM HIS TRAVELS AND EXPERIENCE.

this is a socialist song. the only way the land can be ours is if we control it. the only way to control it is a planned nationalised economy controlled by workers democracy.
