The Spanish renaissance artist known as El Greco was, as his name implies, a Greek. Born as Doménicos Theotokopoulos in Crete in 1541, he moved to Rome when he was 29, and seven years later moved to Toledo in Spain, where he stayed until his death 37 years later. In that time he received major commissions and turned out his finest art. Though he was hugely popular in his time, his contemporaries found his paintings puzzling, especially the elongated figures and the wild colors. Today, many experts regard his as the precursor of cubism and expressionist painting. He had a tendency, as you will note, to paint and repaint some subjects many times with only subtle differences.

Today there is a huge contradiction in the fine arts. There is no style, sensibility and beauty. After Picasso and Matisse the art world is a total mess.
