It's called a Banzai charge. They did it as a last resort they realized the battle was lost. It was intended to make the enemy forces suffer in the hopes they would surrender. 90% it was a useless and inevitable waste.

...that was in manchuria where the secret,massive evacuation of red army from europe to Northern China after germany's defeat...Japan that time was already facing two-front war (w/c they fear Soviet enter the Pacific War) after the Geneva deadline expires prior to droping of nuclear bombs and the same time Okinawa was invaded...this was the time where US and Russia competes for the domination of Japan and Asia (Cold War)!
