As I recall, the effects were done with tape loops, cut into shreds, then assembled at random... then the guitar solo was recorded and mixed in backwards... George Martin deserves a lot more credit than he received for helping craft such gems as this...

Actually that was the description for some of the songs on Sgt Pepper.

Although I wouldn't be surprised if they had been experimenting with it all along.
