OVA's are essentially animation released direct to video, rather than for television or cinema. Disney has gotten into the game too, with Cinderella 2, Bambi 2, Pocahontas 2, and a hoard of others. Japanese OVA's aren't always based upon television programs that have run their course, though. In fact, when they first came out in the 80's they were stand-alone products--titles like Iczer-One, and Bubblegum Crisis. Only later on did popular television animes spawn OVA titles of their own.

When I heard the musical lead-in for the opening song of the first season of Hokuto no Ken, I expected to hear Konata scream "YOU WA SHOCK!" What a let-down...
