Two scenes taken from Paul Schrader's masterpiece about the famous Japanese writer Mishima Yukio.
The b&w sequence is taken, if I am not mistaken, from "Confession of a Mask", Mishima's first novel (1948).
The colour scenes are taken from "The Golden Pavillon" (1956), which is still considered by many as Mishima finest achievement.
Update 10/13/2008
On October the 5th Ogata Ken died of liver cancer. He was 71 years old. Among his best known films we can include Imamura's "Ballad of Narayma" (1983), Schrader's "Mishima" (1985), Peter Greenaway's "The Pillow Book" (1996) and Yamada's "Love and Honor" (2006). A great loss for film fans around the world. Requiescat in pacem.

This movie is so thought-provoking. It is beatiful and grotesque. It is uplifting and depressing. It encompasses and embodies many of the contradictions of Mishima himself.
You are right. It's the "Alternate English narration", right? Finally, I found it out.
Uh, try too be more polite if you can. Interesting enough, neither "vegascorpion" nor I noticed this dub... and this does not actually means that we didn't buy the CC discs.
No, problem. If my response sounded abrasive, I'm sorry. It's actually available here in Japan. But the store I saw it at, Llamtarra, was selling it for nearly $100 bucks. Of course it was an import of the US Criterion release.

By the way, "Wings of Desire" is another great title coming out in autumn in the Criterion Collection.
