You mean if Beethoven hadn't done it, nobody else would have either?
And also, if you're going to use the "emotions, not rules" argument, you should be able to name at least one occasion where Beethoven breaks a rule that's clearly A RULE and not a tendency or habit, and you should be able to name at least one occasion with earlier composers where they themselves felt the rules being restrictive but still gave in. Simply you thinking they abided to rules doesn't mean anything.
If you are trained with a classical ear, then classical music does not in fact relax nor calm but evoke many many feelings and images, all without the use of words. Just listen to the details... and you'll catch the fleeting image.
Oh and btw, Beethoven started a whole new era in music. Without Beethoven, music would still be regulated by rules, not emotion. I consider him the father of all music from mid 1800.
