Just to clear this up, SPE = SPU + Memory Flow Controller. Cell can indeed be faster than a desktop CPU, but only on some few types of calculations due to the limited instructions on the SPUs. On a desktop, a desktop CPU will perform a lot better. Also, Cell is good on decimal operations, for instance, but companies can get better performance for less money with NVIDIA Tesla or ATI FirePro lineups. You're right about the XDR RAM, though. The bandwidth is higher than the usual desktop memory.

Cell is a sub-60-dollar chip. It's nothing close to being a superprocessor. Even a mainstream desktop GPU today would offer NASA better floating point operation performance than Cell.
Single cores can process more than one thread per cycle. Besides, Cell only has one core, the PPE. The SPUs are SIMD vector processors with limited instructions and they can't access system memory. Nothing close to something you can call a "core".
ppe is right, SPU is a term for them, but SPE'S is the coorect term for the 7 other cores, and i call them cores due to lack of a better word. the SPE's or synergistic processing element's are far more complex than you think, i don't know about a dual core, qaud I& or what ever, but sorry, the cell is far superior than that of a desktop CPU, the cell was the first to break the 6GHZ barrier, the processor directly from the worlds fastest supercomputer.capable of....
