ok both of you are sort of right. Beethoven was the essentially the first to be like "this is art music." classical music before him was for entertainment, not the elite. well, Mozart wrote music that served as both entertainment and "art music" but obviously no one recognized as the latter in his day

Beethoven.....un genio. Y Karajan junto a la BPO su mejor interprete. El segundo movimiento de esta sinfonía es tal vez el mejor de todas las que compuso. Que lástima no haber podido ver al mestro Von Karajan en vivo al menos una vez...

Let me ask you a simple question. Who do you think was more of a genius, Beethoven himself or Karajan? Now I never said Karajan is not a genius, i simply said people give the pianist/conductor more credit than they give the conductors. Naturally you hear it from them so your brain is inclined to crediting them above all others, but I'm afraid thats wrong (and thats exactly what you showed me in your comment). By the way why haven't any equally awesome compositions been written by the performers?
