Do really think Jeff Buckley's rendition doesn't stack up. Yes Janet Baker sounds beautiful....but hearing Buckley is stunning like when the most attractive person you've ever seen has just walked the room. You just say to yourself WOW @ least I do.

Damn. I was into it and I was very impressed she made the hair on the back of my neck stand up a bit. Then, at 4:13, she made the hair on my arms stand up for a sec. Wow.

I know! Kind-of puts you off even trying and inspires you all at the same time. I had thought she was a mezzo, always. Then my teacher told me "Oh no, Janet was a soprano, high". I always love it when my analytical brain is switched off and I can just sit back and let the beauty just flood in and take over. What a remarkable performance, very grateful for the video which makes it more compelling :)

I dont understand much of music and I am not a person very emotional but Dido & Aeneas sung by Janet Baker brings me tears of emotion. Just beautiful.

There's that old saying about composers turning in their graves in response to the treatment their music receives after they leave us. This is the complete antithesis to that. If it were possible to bring a composer back to life through performing their music -this would have done it ! In the absence of Purcell himself, Janet Baker owns this aria ! We all know the Anthony Lewis recording. Was this live version or a studio one ever published under Mackerras on lp or cd?

Only a genius could compose such a simple and such an immortal masterpiece. Thank you Dame Janet for this inspired performance.

It's definitely one of the greats. In fact, Robert Greenberg talks a lot about it in his Teaching Company Dvd lectures, How To Listen To And Understand Great Music.
