When did Soivet Union's army fight against Tsarist troops?

The Soviet Red Army fought against monarchist troops during the Russian Civil War. This, took place before the Bolshevik Revolution and was more showing that the Tsarist regime had no qualms to use troops to crack down on opponents of the regime, whether they be in the military or civilian.

When was Soviet Union formed?

The Soviet Union came into existence in 1921. Russia became Communist in 1917, and then the Civil War followed, which did not officially end until 1923. The events of the movie were set in 1905. Hope that makes it clearer for you.

Actually I made a mistake with that. It was in December of 1922 that a treaty was approved to create the USSR, and then the Soviet constitution was ratified in 1924.
