I think that The Singing Detective is a brilliant piece of work. Many people that knew Dennis Potter well reckon it was an autobiography, though he always denied this. The story has everything, mystery, adventure, comedy, music and even pornography! Yes it's all there and so cleverly put together.
From 1986 Michael Gambon plays the title roll. One of the best and influential series of it's time. Though it should be said that it is revered more than it is watched. :)
As Paulmancieric67 said, I believe it was released around 1986. Stars Michael Gambon in the lead role, Janet Suzman, Joanne Whalley, Bill Paterson and Patrick Malahide.
.. and michael gambon is the only person to have a corner named after him on the 'top gear' circuit. he almost flipped the reasonably priced suzuki liana..
Ah, fair point about Al Jarreau. I've amended my description because although I'm pretty sure this version is the one by Bing Crosby & Andrews Sisters, theirs wasn't necessarily the "original".
