Conductors come and they go.... Beethoven is forever.
He is master; yield and live or resist and perish. Karajan knew this despite his ego. Smart.

Although Karajan was a very strict perfectionist while rehearsing, his goal in the actual performance was never to over-conduct. He always desired that his orchestra listened to each other in order to develop the musicality of what they were playing. I think this is why he often closed his eyes: to give the orchestra some space to develop the sound. He never wanted to MAKE the music happen, he wanted to LET the music happen.
