When a person receives 6+ negative comments via the thumbs down symbol, the message becomes null and becomes unable to read. It's some sort of Youtube policy.
Along with Carnivale, I wish Deadwood had been renewed for more seasons. I didn't think I'd like the show, but I got into it after watching the first episode. What a great intro. Perfect song and footage.

I think it's mostly about illustrating what the times were like then. That's why there's always a tense feeling of restrained violence—when it's used, its effect is to highlight a point or theme in the story.
Deadwood is about lawlessness and corruption, the interactions between so-called "civilized" people in a superficially civilized time and place, and the choices they make to live and stay alive.
Again, a shining example of HBO's ability to make shows which are the best on television, and then an inch before the finish line, turn them into the best shows, off television.
