As I said in another post, passive safety is in direct relation to chassis engineering. So, the newer, the better. In these older models cabin compartment is not designed to withstand the extra forces of an offset impact, nor the front is conceived to absorb them before they deform the passenger cell. No airbags would have saved the driver, nor maybe the rear passenger behind him. Sad, but true.

however the volvo simply drove away unscratched
