The father was not as sympathetic as you make him out to be...
He should have left his wife to the care of another psychotherapist instead of trying to treat her by himself. Also, he was clearly losing his sanity as well.  Nature was working on both of them.

I've only read about Trier's movie, but in "Farinelli," this piece parallels the scene you are "thinking about."
