The only FF games that you'd need to play the previous ones to understand are the direct sequels. Like in order to understand X-2 you'd need to have played X.

Yes, in certain points of the game it is sad, mainly because the way the characters are you can really connect with them. And the plot... it's very deep, it's definitely worth getting.
