He/she really does have issues...it's called a period piece!!! Just like any other book that chooses to be historically accurate. For example, I love Jane Austen's work but I'm not going to go psycho because it's set in a time period where women were considered weak and unimportant. That is history and if anything, these books shed light as to how horrible it was during that time and how far we've come as a society. History must be told no matter how awful.
You are an idiot. Of course Mitchell is going to create racist characters because, hello!, it takes place during the civil war in the deep south. That is not to say that she shares the same beliefs as her characters. It would be like someone recording a KKK member expressing his beliefs and accusing the camera guy of agreeing with him.
Its really hard at this date to say that the ones who were cast were the best choices...they all were very good..yes..but then again..they are all we know as far as seeing the final performances time after time. remember ...they had the benefit of having had the chance to grow deeper into the characters and have in depth direction. Watching a screentest is like comparing a paint by numbers to the sistine chapel... So..who is to really know who would have been the ultimate best.
Leigh was the best choice...second would be Paulette Goddard for me...Leigh was the most beautifull...almost too much so...Paulette Goddard however is more "american" in a way...less well bred than leigh and possibly more relatable for american audience of that time...so choice would have been between "relatable" Goddard and absolutely gorgeous leigh...both were good actresses...
Paulette is good and beautiful, but Vivien was Scarlett! Also, I thought Andrea Leeds would have made a great Melanie! She reminds me so of Olivia de Havilland not only in looks but also in her acting, soft spoken and gentle.
