Now for a description of his conducting: ehh...but who cares? He got the sounds he wanted out of the groups he fronted. I personally love Bernstein and his music, enjoy most of his interpretations (this might have been a little schmaltzy, but it was still beautifully rendered), and will be happy when my fiance purchases me the Bernstein Mahler boxset for X-mas.

Ho ho ho.

"Used car salesman"...that's cute, and dare I say a *wee bit accurate. Let's put that comment in perspective: if Bernstein was literally a used car salesman and alive today, he'd be the CEO of Detroit. Think about what he sold for most of his life: antiquated music to the masses. And they bought it! Amazing, considering the tenor of music at the time. His combination of pop and classical elements alone define the crux of popular classical music of his era.

One can only imagine if Mozart ever heard his music performed this well. Thank you for posting this beautiful performance. I've heard six performances of this piece and I like this one the best.

@Fretkillr

Mozart would have been dismayed at this sloppy and tasteless interpretation.

After reading your comment, one can only ask what planet you live on. Berstein was simply put, the greatest conductor of the the second half of the twentieth century, period, end of story. If Mozart was meant to always sound staid and morose, then I agree, Karajan would be the better choice. I suggest you actually familiarize yourself with Bernstein's recording oeuvre first before you render such phillistine judgements.

You obviously have not heard any of Karajan's Mozart. It's anything but staid and morose.

Greatest conductor in the second half of the 20th century? Give me a break. Karajan, Solti, Marriner, Pinnock, Koopman, and even relative unknowns like Pearlman are far superior for classical/baroque performance.

Some 20th century hoots and clatter with repetative pseudo-beethovian flourishes on strings? That's where Bernstein shines. He's the used car salesman of orchestral music.
