Serge Redding - 502lb. (228kg.) Clean & Press

The great Redding with a mighty Clean and Press of 502lb. for a new world record. However, this would stand for a mere 3 minutes (see Alexeev 230kg. Press)

I agree with mouseman71. I'm 5'7" (or I was in 1970; I've shrunk since then!), and when I stood next to Reding, he seemed just a bare shade shorter than me. He was often listed as 5-foot-8, but I always thought that was inaccurate. 5'6", 295 seemed to be his actual stats at his peak. Of course, shoes make a difference, but shod or unshod, Serge was a regular cast-iron fire hydrant of a man.

I was on an elevator with this guy at the Worlds in Columbus, Ohio, in 1970. We were exactly the same height, 5'6".

they're not fat because they're strong, but their frames do lend themselves well to weight-training cos they naturally have a lot of brute strength but not a lot of stamina

Slightly narrow hand spacing but maybe what worked best for him. Then they passed Alexeev's 507 done with a leg kick. In meet years ago, a Bulgar 67.5 class lifter "pressed" 157.5, Mladen Kuchev I think was his name, he used exaggerated cheat, it passed, while Russ Knipp's great lift in Munich was turned down due to Communist influenced judges. Same type judges in this Lima, Peru, meet were biased in favor of Alexeev. USSR was more "important" than Belgium but all knew Serge was STRONGER!!!
