I love guitarists like Burrell, Pass, Green, even was lucky to've seen Wes live BUT guys like Abercrombie play with equal feel & dexterity. J.A, Frisell, and many "outside-the-box" players can play standards like Burrell when called upon. In jazz there's space for ANY style. For me, the main thing is FEEL and John has great feel.
So funny, love to hear musicians argue about who's "better" ! etc... Nothing personal, but... should probably shut up and go practice and write and record and maybe some other musicians will argue about you and your music!
I can see that old school way of thinking as pertaining to jazz guitarists because no one playing today is as good as Wes montgomery, joe pass, Tal farlow, kenny burrell, django reinhardt, Jim hall(he still is) etc. And i love a lot of players from the last 35 years.there's just no substitute for the original. That's hard for me to say because i'm a guitar player who's still trying to move the music forward.
I have this wonderful friend in SLC, a decent guitar player (state-class you might say). He hates JA, he hates Metheny, Scofield, Rypdal. Some guys cling to the past: he loves Kessel, tolerates Chuck Wayne - you get the picture. I got acquainted with Abercrombie thru his work in the 80's with Richie Beirach and he's been one of my guys since then. Nice to know I'm not alone!

Well said! I agree with you totally.
The laws of karma apply to music also.
Thanks!!!
